This program computes the proper scanning resolution for a image that will be output on an imagesetter at a given size and line screen value. The formula on which the program is based assures the required amount of scanned information will be present to avoid image breakdown.
Three factors are involved. The scale at which the image will be used as compared to the orignal. The line screen value at which the image will be output. Finally, the "quality factor". The quality factor is a number typically between 1.25 and 2.0 that balances the size of the file with the desired quality of the image. If you are unsure about this use a quality factor of 1.5. It is a reliable starting point.
This program uses the width of the original and the width of the output to compute the scaling factor for you. Enter them when prompted. You will then be prompted for the line screen value to be used for output and the quality factor. When the calculator stops the appropriate scanning resolution will be displayed.
